Faster Rapids, Thoughtful Design and Solid Construction of JE80S Contribute to Higher Productivity
![]() Paul Johnson next to TMi’s new JE80S Taylor Metalworks, Inc. (TMi) of Orchard Park, New York is a supplier of precision CNC machined aluminum castings to a wide variety of markets. Founded in 1948, TMi is an ISO9001-2000 certified contract engineering house.
In the fall of 2005, TMi purchased their first Enshu machining center: a JE80S. The JE80S is an ultra-high performance Horizontal Machining Center specially designed to ramp-up productivity on a wide range of materials typically machined within the automotive and information technology industries. It features a 15,000rpm CAT40 spindle, 1.0g acceleration, and 3,543ipm rapid traverse rates in X,Y and Z.
Paul Johnson, Project Engineer at TMi, says that the JE80S has rapid traverse rates that are three times as fast as comparable machining centers from other manufacturers at TMi. Johnson mentioned that TMi saw 35% cycle time improvements simply by moving existing programs from other machining centers to their JE80S.
TMi equipped their JE80S with a number of options, including a Renishaw MP10 probe, extended work offsets, 600 macro variables, coordinate rotation, and 200 pairs of tool offsets. In addition, through spindle coolant was upgraded from the standard 256psi to 1000psi. The 256psi coolant pump was re-tasked for bed flush coolant duty, providing enhanced chip evacuation.
TMi also tasked Enshu to provide special pallets with a special hole pattern to accommodate TMi’s fixtures. Enshu was able to provide quick turnaround on these special configuration pallets.
According to Johnson, the good design and solid build of their JE80S stands out. In terms of design, Johnson mentioned the easy accessibility and well-thought out details of the JE80S. “Components are placed for easy access” says Johnson, and the open-topped wide access doors at the operator load area allow quick and easy pallet change over.
Johnson stated that the attention to detail in the design of the JE80S is shown in everything from the pantographic links of the slide way covers to the use of galvanized steel pipe coolant lines. The pantographic links allow the slide way covers to move freely and keep up with spindle movement, and the use of galvanized steel pipe (rather than plastic pipe or hoses) reduces leakage. Features such as these increase the uptime, productivity and efficiency of the JE80S.
